Burning Calories at Work

It can be hard to burn calories while sitting in an office or dorm room, but there are a few steps you can take to stay fit.

TRAC Personal Trainer Brian Riebeling recommends sitting on a Bosu ball, instead of a regular office chair because it will force you to engage your core muscles strength. Riebeling also suggests standing at your desk if possible or using a high end table.

“New research shows standing, instead of sitting will help increase your physical well-being and your mental capacity throughout the day,” said Riebeling.

Another great option to burn calories at the office is taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

“You’ll burn more calories and get a good workout if you go up several flights of stairs, rather than wait for the elevator,” he said.

UIS Homecoming 5K Walk/Run

The Department of Recreational Sports at UIS is hosting the 2nd annual Homecoming 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The race is open to all UIS students, faculty and staff along with community members.

The course consists of a double loop around and throughout the beautiful UIS campus. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the race kicks off at 9 a.m. outside of The Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC).

“You can walk it or you can run it. Either way it’s a great opportunity to be healthy and to engage in some campus activities,” said Amanda Jillson, TRAC assistant director for Fitness & Instructional Programs.

The cost to enter the 5K is $10 before race day and $15 the day of the event. The fee includes T-shirts, which will be handed out on a first come first serve basis. Registration forms can be found at the REC Sports office in TRAC or can be downloaded from the REC Sports website.

The 5K Run/Walk was a big hit last year with 99 participants taking part in the 3.1 mile race.

“We’re hoping to have at least 100 racers this year,” said Jillson.

The top male and female runners in the categories of youth (18 and under), UIS student, UIS employee, and open (community) will be awarded prizes.
